Understanding the Impact of Sleep Apnea on the Trucking Industry
How many truck drivers suffer from moderate to severe sleep apnea? How does sleep apnea affect commercial fleets? Would a federal rule regarding sleep apnea negatively impact the trucking industry? The DOT took the first step towards answering these questions as a “pre-rule” makes its way through Capitol Hill.
The White House Office of Management and Budget cleared the pre-rule earlier this month. This rule allows the FMCSA and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to collect important data regarding sleep apnea and the trucking industry.
Once the DOT has the go ahead, the FMCSA and FRA will determine the number of truck drivers who are currently diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea. The two agencies will also request feedback regarding what impact a rule regarding sleep apnea may have on the trucking industry.
Report by 2017
If the pre rule process goes smoothly, the results from the data collection process may be published by the end of 2016. This will allow the DOT and the trucking industry to move closer to determining how to help truck drivers who suffer from sleep apnea.
